Readoption

After we brought the kids home, I just could not bare to look at one more piece of paper. I was done with documents and signatures, not to mention that I didn't have time for them. I told myself that I would begin the readoption at the end of last year. That came and went and I realized that the kids are getting older. Next year they will begin pre-school and I thought I should get this final step done before I created a bigger hassle for myself later.

Readoption is simply a formality. Lily and Noah have official Guatemalan birth certificates with our last name and their given first names. Readoption is basically the formal changing of the kids' first and middle names and the issuance of U.S. birth certificates. It is not necessary for any legal purposes, but should Lily and Noah need additional copies of their Guatemalan birth certificates sometime later in life, it might be difficult to get them. The readoption seals their old birth certificates and their new ones become their only official birth certificates.

We requested our hearing dates for mid September. I wasn't aware of it, but it sounds as though we get to go before the judge and everything. Sounds kind of fun. Then I will have to begin the process of having Lily and Noah's name changed on their Social Security cards, medical records and our will. It really wasn't possible to have done the readoption before we needed SS cards, medical insurance or a will, so my putting it off has created no additional hassle. It will just be good to get this done.

We went to the zoo on Sunday. Just a local zoo that has monkeys, birds, a petting zoo, a train you can ride and a carousel. It is perfect for us. It was a big deal for us because it was the first time we have done a large public place without the stroller. We did use the backpacks (leashes), but I think we could have done without them. Next time.

Since I am usually the one taking the pictures, I will post a couple where I am actually in the picture. Noah isn't looking, but at least they prove I was there!

First off....these kids are totally you and Ro's mini-mes. They truly look just like you! We did second parent adoptions and it was literally 2 minutes in and out! It was a nice formality and we got to take some nice pictures in the courthouse and with the judge!
